October 28...En Route to Custer State Park

(Kim's Perspective)
We got up early and left RMNP - hallelujah - and headed to South Dakota via I-25 through Cheyenne, Wyoming.

As we were pulling out of our campsite, I turned around before getting into the truck and saw this...

This particular elk deemed it necessary to check out each and every fire pit along the campground loop to see if there was anything tasty left behind by a careless camper. Or maybe she was just eating the ash. Who knows. It was funny to watch regardless.

The wind had subsided so we were finally able to see the range of snow covered Rocky Mountain peaks.

Nice. And a bummer that we were there for several days and couldn't enjoy them. Oh well.

The drive was standard. Merlin was tired...

The road was winding...

The billboards amused...

The locals were on a Sunday drive...(AKA driving 15 under the posted limit)

and apparently enjoy shooting up their welcome sign...

and the town claim to fame was as entertaining as ever.

We arrived at Custer State Park around 4pm. We stopped by the visitor center and got info. on the campground. Within minutes we saw bighorn sheep, turkeys, and a pile of mule deer.

Turtles get their own sign around here...

We decided on a spot at the Game Lodge campground and dumped our tanks, filled our water containers, and finished setting up before dark. This getting dark at 5:30 business sucks. We took the Boys for a walk around the campground, had dinner and watched a couple episodes before heading to bed.
