We were stuck at RMNP for another day due to the ridiculous wind storm, so we tried to make the most of it. We bundled up, took a drive, and stopped at Roosevelt National Forest for a hike.
En route, we drove by Long’s Peak – the only 14’er in the park.
There was some cool monastery or Catholic building thingy that I thought was really beautiful. It kind of looked like something out of a Thomas Kincaid painting...
Snow devils are cool...
We also drove into the Long's Peak campground area just to check it out. The road was ice covered. Shockingly, there was no one camping there. Imagine that.
When we got to the trailhead, there was only one car there and the owner was heading back to it with her 3 unleashed dogs. One was very interested in running after the truck and jumping up to check out the rear seat passengers. Bad dog. A fair amount of barking ensued. Once Three Dog Hike woman left, we unloaded the Boys and headed up the trail.
It was windy. Insanely windy. Like, potential to knock me down kind of windy.
Pretty though...
I was struggling to stay upright and even the Boys had to hunker lower to the ground to avoid getting pushed over by the wind. They romped like puppies. Impressive considering they're 70 and 77 years old. ;P
Twist enjoyed a good snork in the snow...
After we spent more time removing ice balls from their feet than time spent actually walking, we decided it was time to go. Sore dog paws are no good. We drove back into the park and arrived at the trailer just as the sun was setting.
We took the Boys for a very long walk around the closed loops of the campground. We were gone for nearly two hours. A lot of that time was spent standing still and watching the herds of elk that were grazing in the meadows. The rut is on, so we got to watch some of the young bulls tussle a bit and the larger bulls bugle back and forth in their squeaky squeals of dominance. Whatever tough guy - you sound like Mike Tyson and much like Tyson, it makes it hard to take you seriously. It was still really cool though. The Boys enjoyed it too. Twist more than Merlin, but Twist seems to enjoy wildlife viewing far more than Merlin anyway. We walked back to the campsite as it was getting dark. A pretty good day considering we felt like we were trapped and were both eager to leave RMNP for a new (warmer and less windy) destination. :)
