September 27...En Route to Hells Canyon RV Park

This morning, we had plans to visit the Wolf Education and Research Center before hitching up and heading to White Bird. FAIL.

We got to the research center and the gate was locked with a CLOSED sign dangling from it. Grrrr…. There was a sign posted that said they had an office in town so we headed to Winchester to locate it. Another FAIL. We were forced to stop at the Winchester Historical Museum to ask for directions. Instead, we were taken hostage and dragged – literally – into the museum. I use the word museum loosely. It was really more like an old lady’s basement with a century's worth of junk in it. It was weird. The town was weird. As evidenced by their choice of road signs...


After our kidnappers released us, we drove through the rest of "town" and found the Wolf Education and Research Center office – it was closed. Okay. So clearly this was not meant to be. Let’s leave.

We headed back to the campsite and chilled a bit before packing up and heading out. We had less than a hundred miles to get to the next destination – White Bird, Idaho - so we weren’t in much of a rush.

We drove through “Rattlesnake Canyon” – a real treat with the trailer in tow. There were 3 runaway truck ramps in less than 7 miles. Eeek.






We also encountered some "crop burning"???? I dunno. Not a practice I've seen performed in Maryland.



We arrived at Swiftwater RV Park to find out that A) the owner wasn’t there and B) it sucked. We left and headed down the road to find something else. We ended up at Hells Canyon Jet Boat Trips and Lodging - a motel/RV park combo that is owned and operated by Killgore Adventures (a competitor of the outfitter we’re going on the jet boat tour with). D’OH. It was only 25 bucks a night for full hook-up so we grabbed a spot and paid for two nights. We chatted with the owner for awhile and she gave us some good information on some scenic drives in the area as well as some insight into the jet boat tours.

We took the Boys to the beach, played stick awhile, headed to the trailer and had dinner.


We watched a couple videos for the Snake River Adventure Boogie Boat tour and were smiling in anticipation of our day tomorrow. I think it’s going to be a hoot!
