You’d think after 11,000 miles of driving that we’d be sick of scenic byways and dirt roads that lead to panoramic views. Well, we’re not. So, after getting information and a Hells Canyon NRA map at the US Forest Service Office in Joseph, all four of us jumped in the truck and hopped on the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway to explore the area a bit and check out the Canyon Overlook.
The road was twisty with lots of tight curves that had the Boys struggling to stay balanced as they “Danger Dogged” it out the window.
It's important to pay attention while driving around here. You never know what you're going to encounter in the road.
After seemingly forever, we made it to the overlook and decided it would be a good spot to have a late lunch.
The weather was nice and we were the only ones around so it was nice to have the entire canyon to ourselves.
Some info. on the canyon sans the "millions of years ago" crap. If God created Adam and Eve as adults, why would He not create earth with an "adult geology"?? Think about it... ;)
After we ate, we decided to take the dirt road to P.O. Saddle where we were told by Yvonne at the Forest Service office there was a nice lookout.
(Sections of the road were pretty rough.)
I don’t know what this particular P.O. stands for but I’m thinking whoever named it probably did so based on their mood after driving several miles on a rough dirt road to find that the lookout is largely non-existent. Sure, if you stretch your neck, stand on your tip toes and peer through the dense forest, you MIGHT be able to actually see something at the LOOKout. Description FAIL.
In Yvonne's defense, there was one spot along the way that afforded a view into the canyon, but you pretty much had to stop in the middle of the road, jump out of your vehicle and trudge through the weeds to see it.
We headed back the way we came and pulled over along the way to snap some shots and let the Boys stretch their legs some.
It was getting dark and critters were darting in front of us on the road
while we were being escorted back to the campground with a gorgeous full moon tagging along behind us.
