Bill wasn’t feeling well this morning so we had a light breakfast and I showered and straightened the trailer until he was feeling well enough to leave.
We left the Boys behind and drove over to the Wallowa Lake Tramway. It was a bit pricey at $24 per person for a single ride (as compared to the other lifts/trams we’ve taken on this trip) but it was cool and quite worth the additional few bucks.
I’m not sure when it was built, but whenever that was, it set a record for the longest tram in North America.
It took about 15 minutes to get to the top and it was a little unnerving. It made a LOT of noise and was REALLY bumpy…these are not things I like to experience while dangling in a metal box 70 feet in the air.
We hopped off the tram and strolled around the summit.
It was quite nice. The views were pretty impressive and the trails, while short, were well maintained with information to stop and read along the way.
My attempt at being artsy...
The ground squirrels and chipmunks were really aggressive and on several occasions, ran up our legs to see if we had anything of interest to them. I love these pictures. They make me laugh.
I can just picture this little guy wearing a little red t-shirt and a blue cape. "I am Mighty 'Munk and I shall save the universe from destruction!"
We hiked the various trails for a couple of hours and then had lunch at the Summit Grill. The food was surprisingly good...
and the view was nice.
We paid the bill and headed back down the rickety tram to the parking area and zipped back to the campground. Bill was still not feeling super great so I took the Boys for a walk down to the lake. We had the entire beach area to ourselves so I let them off lead and we played stick for awhile. I consulted my watch, saw that we had been gone for nearly an hour and a half (stick is FUN!) and figured we should head back to check on Bill.
Meanwhile, he had grown weary of waiting and tried to intercept the walk. I didn't take the direct route back however, so by the time I arrived, he was nowhere to be seen. I set up the “front yard” for the Boys and just as I was finishing, Bill walked up. Perfect timing. We sat in our oh-so-comfy chairs for a bit and the Boys napped on their dog beds while Bill and I discussed what the evening would entail.
We decided on pie for dinner. ;P We’ve been jonesing for the pie since we did laundry yesterday and decided that pie was a perfectly acceptable dinner choice. We loaded the Boys in the truck and headed into the booming metropolis of Joseph. We pulled up to the Soda Shoppe at 5:58. They close at 6pm. FAIL. Bummer. NOW what are we going to do? We stopped by another little shop, but it too was closed.
We got gas and filled the empty propane tank we had stashed in the truck and then decided to drive to Enterprise. I would have preferred to beam directly there, but we can’t get signal so I’m sure the transporter’s energizing capability is also being negatively affected. ;P
There’s pretty much nothing to do in Enterprise so we turned around and headed back to the campground. I booted up the laptop, made some tea, transferred pics to the computer and worked on a draft of the last few days for the blog.
Bill was still feeling a little off so he stretched out on the bed with his Kindle while Merlin snuggled up next to him and whimpered in his sleep. We’re never sure if he’s having good dreams or bad dreams so we wake him if he keeps it up. Bill reached over to wake him and Merlin didn’t seem to appreciate it. He looked at Bill and made this half growl, half whiney “what did you do that for?” kind of noise. Bill assumed it must have been a good dream and I told him that he was probably dreaming of playing stick with Mommy. ;) I know, I know. Anthropomorphizing yet again. Whatever. It was cute.
